the Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled (My take)

I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t particularly fond of the Miramax film “the Thief and the Cobbler.” In fact I found it to be rather annoying with the over-use of the inner monologues of the two silent characters. Which is sad because the animation is beautiful and offers some insight into the story that it’s trying to tell. Luckily there is another version that I happened to come across on YouTube, called “the Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled.” This version is not released by Miramax and does not have songs, inner monologues, even some of the voice actors are different. Instead, this version has storyboards and original animation that was done by the animator. And most of all, the two characters that had a lot of inner monologue are silent. Except Tack has only one line, but throughout the majority of the film he is silent. And I rather liked it. The animation alone looked like it could hold it’s ground and this version proves it. While I will say there is little dialogue, I think the animation pretty much makes up for it. It’s done so that the story could be told through visuals rather than dialogue. Which in film, that’s what it’s all about. I especially love the romance between Princess Yum-yum and Tack because of the fact that Tack rarely ever talks. As opposed to the other version where his inner monologue explains everything, in this version you can see his emotions through his actions. Which in my opinion is a lot more stronger. Although I will say that the princess might have a bit of an obsession going on with him, I still like her in this version because she’s not as weak as you would think. She actually takes matter into her own hands and can manage on her own. But I don’t think I like the actress who voices her or Tack for that matter. Even though he only has one line, I still can’t take either of them seriously. So I’m not going to go too far as to say it’s the best film I have ever seen, but it’s definitely better than the Miramax version. So if you can stand silent movies and/or are into animation, I would recommend checking it out.
